Iasmah-Adad

Iasmah-Adad
(reigned ca. 1796-1776 b.c.)
The fourth Amorite ruler of Mari and the son of the Amorite king of Assyria, Shamshi-Adad. The second Amorite king of Mari, Iahdun-Lim, was succeeded by one of his sons, Samu-Iamin, who may have obtained the throne by murdering his father. But Samu-Iamin himself was soon assassinated, after which Shamshi-Adad seized Mari and placed Iasmah-Adad (or Yasmah-Adad) on its throne. Several surviving letters exchanged between Shamshi-Adad and Iasmah-Adad, in which the father reprimands the son, show that the younger man was a mediocre ruler little interested in state affairs. When Shamshi-Adad died, another of Iahdun-Lim's sons, Zimri-Lim, pushed the ineffectual Iasmah-Adad aside and took Mari's throne.
